Calling out the “Finding fault is good for the GOP”

The below was in answer to a huge fight over a group of bloggers who insisted that finding fault in GWB and McCain would somehow get Independents and cross over Democrats to vote GOP in 2010 and 2012.

Of course the “real” conservative Ronald Reagan was mentioned quite frequently and how those two men fell way short of his high standard.

So I wrote:

Yes, LET’S discuss Reagan’s failings, shall we?  After all, you all believe that this kind of criticism helps sell Palin and the GOP.
The fact is that Reagan DID spend, big time.  In fact Ronald Reagan, not George W. Bush, set the precedent of a Republican piling up large federal deficits not just on defense but on a massive bail out of one particular social “new deal” program called social security. (And yeah, I do know why he had to bail out SS, it was for the same reason that GWB had to give seniors a drug plan, but no one gives GWB a pass, do they?)
Tax increases may have been passed by a Democratic Congress but HE signed those increases into law.  By the way, Reagan signed into law as governor of California one of the most liberal abortion laws and do we even want to get into a discussion of his SCOTUS picks?
His talks of nuclear disarmament had conservatives like Patrick Buchanan, Richard Perle, and Caspar Weinberger pulling their hairs and if I’m not mistaken Cindy did a whole spread on exactly what the “real” conservatives who attacked GWB said about Reagan back then.
Do you want to talk about the various resignations, palace coups, and job switches that involved Al Haig, James Watt, David Stockman, Bill Clark, James Baker, Robert McFarland, Oliver North, Michael Deaver, Don Regan, and tons of others who freelanced and squabbled under a boss that was supposed to inspire the kind of loyalty you blame GWB for not getting from his staff?
Let’s discuss Iran-Contra and the precipitous withdrawal from Lebanon that weakened America’s reputation abroad among its most hostile enemies.
Do you guys REALLY want to get into the failings of a man that was very human?
Do you REALLY think these kind of discussion will help to foster a united group to defend Palin and other GOPs?
If so, let’s do it.  I’ve got 8 years of Ronald Reagan failings to go over.  And then we’ll go over Huckerbee’s…and Hillary and whoever else this group likes….ending with criticism and failings of Sarah Palin.
Or maybe, just maybe, you guys are starting to get my drift.
By the way, it sounds like I disliked Reagan or I didn’t think he was a good president, doesn’t it?  Well I do like him and I thought he was wonderful which is why I only bring out his flaws when people insist on bringing out GWB’s.  Otherwise, I think of what he gave and the good he did and I tell people THAT is why you vote GOP.  I do the same with GWB and McCain.  I sell the good the GOP does and can do, Not what they didn’t or should have done.
